Pancake Day-London, UKShrove Tuesday ~ 8 Mar 2011


Pancake Day (Fat Tuesday) is the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of lent. This is a period of fasting before Easter and many rich foods such as butter and eggs are therefore prohibited the use of all these things in the making of the traditional and very tasty pancakes!


Pancake Tuesday is celebrated in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia and many other Protestant and Catholic countries such as the United States, France, Greece, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Spain and many others.


Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is celebrated in France and some parts of the USA and in Catholic countries such as Spain and Brazil. It is celebrated as the time when rich food are eaten before Lent, which lasts 40 days.


In Greece and Cyprus the period of fasting before Easter is called 'apokria and will run during the month of February during the Carnival. The first week hot meat Week (Kreatini) and you can eat mea. The second week is cheese week (Tyrini) and then after this rich foods and meat are not eaten again to Easter Sunday.


In Sweden is Fat Tuesday called Fettisdagen (translated as fat Tuesday) and on this day the semlor is eaten (a sandwich filled with cream and marzipan).


Since the 15th century villages and cities a pancake race held. The first race was held in Olney in Buckinghamshire and the tradition is still enjoyed by many and the race runs throw a pancake in a pan.


Fasting stops on Easter Sunday when everyone enjoy a feast and the obligatory hot cross buns and chocolate Easter eggs.
